The arts have a solid home in Finland, whether they are visual, musical, or performance based. Here are a few not to miss. Helsinki City Art Museum This museum is located in the Tennispalatsi, which houses art galleries, restaurants, and a multiplex movie theater. Address: Salomonkatu 15. Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. You can’t miss Kiasma while in downtown Helsinki. It is a large, kidney shaped glass building on Helsinki’s main thoroughfare. Kiasma has paintings, sculptures, photographs, films, and showcases performance artists. The bookstore has a nice selection of art books in English. Address: Mannerheiminaukio 2. Didrichsen Art Museum We have this museum because the Didrechsen family created this temple to their love of art. The museum has a significant collection of Finnish 20th century paintings including Schjerfbeck and Ederfelt. There are also works from other 20th century masters like Picasso, Kandinsky, and Giacometti, among others. The museum houses the only pre-Columbian art exhibited in Finland and Chinese art from the Ming dynasty. Address: Kuusilahdenkuja 1. Amos Anderson Art Museum Amos Anderson, once owner of the largest Swedish daily newspaper in Finland, was a patron of the visual arts, music, and theater in Finland. With over 7,000 pieces of art displayed in his former home, it is one of the largest private collections in Finland. His personal collection primarily consists of 20th century Finnish art, but there are other contemporary Finnish and Scandinavian artists on display as well as rotating exhibitions featuring young artists. His interest in antiquity and classical culture also led to the establishment of the Institutum Romanum Finlandiae at the Villa Lante, Rome. Address: Yrjankatu 27. Sinebrychoff Art Museum Sinebrynchoff is Finland’s only museum specializing in pre-20th century European art. The permanent collection includes works from 15th, 16th and 18th century Italian masters, 17th century Dutch artists, and works from the Empire period,r ecent rotating exhibitions featured works from the Impressionist era, silver from the Russian czars, and 18th century European women artists.
