Finland's capital has a reputation as an expensive holiday destination, but there are some affordable hotels and hostels in Helsinki.

Helsinki hotel rates are relatively high but there are a few cheaper accommodation options. The Omena Hotels chain offers affordable rooms in two different locations in Helsinki, and there are several hostels in the city.

Omena Hotels in Helsinki

The Omena (Apple) hotel chain has done to hotels what low-cost airlines did to flights. Services in the Omena hotels are reduced to the minimum: the hotels have no staff on-site, rooms are booked and paid in advance online and guests are given individual door codes to access the hotel and the guest rooms. Breakfast is offered for an additional fee in a nearby café. The only members of staff the guests are likely to meet are the cleaners in the morning, but a helpline serves visitors in emergencies. The Omena chain has two hotels in Helsinki (Lönnrotinkatu 13 and Eerikinkatu 24) and operates hotels in other Finnish cities too. Rooms can accommodate up to four people and rates vary depending on timing, location and the amount of guests in the room.

Other Affordable Hotels in Helsinki

For just a bit more money it is possible to find a comfortable hotel room in Helsinki that offers free breakfast and other standard hotel amenities. The Cumulus chain has rooms for under €100.00 in central locations in Helsinki and frequently offers last-minute deals as well as discounts for online booking.

Hostel Accommodation in Helsinki

The Hostel Academica (Hietaniemenkatu 14) operates only in the summer from early June to the end of August. The Academica has a central location and offers affordable accommodation from dormitory beds to rooms with showers and kitchenettes. Rates for dormitory beds start from around € 24.00. Guests can also use the hostel’s sauna and the swimming pool in the morning.

The Stadion Hostel (Pohjoinen Stadiontie 4) by the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, a short distance from the city centre, is open around the year and offers hostel accommodation in dormitory beds from €20.00/night. Individual travellers can only book individual beds but groups or families can choose from a range of private rooms. Breakfast is available for a fee and the hostel has a guest kitchen.

Hostel Erottajanpuisto has a good location in Erottajanpuisto in the middle of Helsinki. The hostel is open around the year and has a range of rooms and dorm beds with shared toilets and showers. Rates for dorm beds start from €25.00 and room rates vary depending on the number of beds in the room. The hostel has a guest kitchen and a 24-hour reception.
